KLUTCH TAKES BIG PROFIT HIT FROM RAIN OUT!

RAINMAN RESPONDS!

REPORTS FROM PARIS!

SHARK WEEK IS COMING!

Belo News
July 23, 2011

Galesburg, Mi. – As dawn broke wet over the Shark Cove, our intrepid hero was slow to rise as he had picked up Lava Girl at the Detroit Airport and did not get back to the Cove and into his Shark pajama’s until after midnight. As he rolled over to turn off the shark alarm, he heard thunder and saw the flash of lightening!

Bounding from bed, he clicked on the shark radar and noted the mass of green, yellow and even red, glowing over western Michigan as far as Lake Michigan and covering his beloved Field of Dreams. Our hero went back to bed until 6:30 a.m. when he went through the routine once more. The radar was still showing major rain, while he could hear the pounding rain and lightening on the roof of the Cove. It was therefore decided to post at Belo News that the ride would be cancelled.

Around 6:45 a.m. All Black called and Sharkman told him he wasn’t riding. As we all know, nothing brings fear to the heart of the old shark like lightening…..

However, at 8:05 a.m. our hero received a text message from Wolf King that simply said, “Sissy.”

Wait, what? Sharkman went out to get the paper and it was still raining at 8:00 a.m., though the lightening and thunder had abated. Could someone have ridden? Minions all know that the Sharkman will ride in the rain, but will not start in the rain.

Later, the above photo appeared proving someone was at the Klutch! And the Klutch looked empty!

It seemed that Wolf King, Jeff G. (name to be determined) Peugeot Guy, Squeaky and another rider, whose name no one could remember but rides a white KHS, had actually arrived….. and rode! (Our apologies to this rider, just let us know who you are and we will post it next week).

Though it was reportedly a bit wet at the start, the ride dried out as it went on and the 5 riders made a successful traverse of the KK-TdG. No one reported who won, how fast they rode or provided any proof that they had indeed ridden and didn’t just go to the Klutch for a Kup.

Meanwhile, the Koffee Klutch took a major profit hit without the mass of Minions stopping in for their normal Koffee fix, with assorted muffins, buns and rolls.

The Mighty Minion Nation will have to make up for that this week!

It was also later learned that Tow Truck had a family reunion going on last weekend and had planned to bring an entire “sprint crew” from Team Miller to wreak havoc on the peloton. Planning to take every sprint and the final dash to the tape, Tow Truck was quoted as staying, “darn!” when he saw the morning storm. Lucky for the Mighty Minion Nation!

Unfortunately, the Sharkman will be absent the next two weeks as he attends a wedding this week and then is out to see the latest Sharklet addition and attend the Sharklet’s Baptisms in Santa Fe! Yes, a double header Baptism!

But the ride goes on!

RAINMAN BAILS ON THE MINIONS, CREATES DOMINO EFFECT AMONG THE NATION:

Belo News
July 16, 2011

(Editors Note – Rainman attempts to defends his (and Tardettes) absence a week ago after a Wine Tasting Fund Raiser at Binder Park Zoo)

Battle Creek, MI. - Wrong Way and Rainman had the same idea, to ride in, but when the alarm rang at 6:20am at their separate coves, the festivities the evening before were felt like the weight of an elephant at the Africa exhibit!

Belo News reports that Rainman walked around for nearly 20 minutes doing a system-check and deciding if Rainman’s body was ready for a 50+ mile punishment after little recovery. Reports further claim that Rainman answered Rainman’s own condition-check and bailed first over a text exchange with Wrong Way. Wrong Way, responded, calling the stage race a truce (editors note: before rubber ever hit the road!) and later admitted that he was quietly thankful that Rainman had announced a partial rest day.

…Meanwhile, Tardette made no motion, or showed no motivation, what-so-ever. Her promise to Sharkman to meet up for Koffee after the ride was as empty as her tasting glass Friday evening. Tardette had ‘no comment’ when approached about the subject.

Will these Mighty Minions [ever] return to the peloton?

Stay tuned, Bunkie!

(Editors Note – Hey, is Rainman making fun of the Editors of Belo News?)

REPORT FROM PARIS!

BISSELL BOY CHECKS IN!

Belo News
July 24, 2011

Paris, France – Our own Bissell Boy and family were at the finish of this years Tour de France and got close enough to get photos of both the winner, Cadel Evans, as well as Garmin-Cervelo Coach Jonathan Vaughters! Where else can you get in-depth reporting like this? Is this great reporting or what?

Bissell Boy and Family reported having a fantastic time as they took in the sights of Paris and the phenomenal experience of the Tour on the Champs-Élysées! Can it get any better? (Well yes, if they could get an Oberon!)

And who wasn’t moved by watching the first Australian a top the podium, the flag of his country wrapped around him and a tear in his eye as they played the Australian National Anthem! And having brothers both finish on the podium? And no matter how you feel about Cavendish, it was a Tour of firsts! First Australian to win it, first time two brothers finished on the podium and first time a Brit has won the Green Sprinters Jersey!

It was a great Tour and seeing Evans win it in the Time Trial on Saturday was incredible drama! Is this a great sport or what?

Big thanks to Bissell Boy for his photos and in-depth reporting from the scene!

Bissell Boy and Family!

And, if you are going through TdF withdrawals like our friend Stingray, well, it is time for:

TUESDAY NIGHT RIDE REPORT

Belo News
July 26, 2011

Battle Creek, Mi. – Eight riders showed up for this weeks edition of the Tuesday night ride and one would have thought it was Tony the Tiger Jersey night, as three of the riders had a Kellogg Jersey on. All Black, Hoosier Boy, Stingray, Rainman (not in a white jersey, still mourning the loss by his alter-ego Andy Schleck) and the Sharkman launched from the HQ start. They were first met by Hossman, then Boatman and finally the Skipper by the time they got to Augusta. Working in a very tight pace line, our hero’s hammered to a 20.5 average for the entire ride. These Minions can fly!

If you are looking for good pace line riding, this is the ride for you! Next week, the ride will launch from the Visitor Lot in the front of Kellogg HQ as the Upper Deck Parking is being resurfaced.

6:00 P.M. Launch! – Sharp! Be there!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE WAM RIDERS AND TEAM TAYLOR THIS WEEKEND!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Belo News,

I thought you might like to run this as a "Quote of the Week":

“As you know…..the physical shadow I cast is pretty small, but the shadow my legend casts is immeasurable!”

The Sharkman

I thought all super-heroes were humble characters, but this Sharkman, well, he's just a character.

Signed,
A loyal Minion

Dear Loyal Minion (Stingray),

This quote came during preparation for a very hot ride. Stingray asked if the Sharkman cast a good shadow for shade and that was his answer. Another famous Sharkman quote;

“You don’t need to believe everything you hear, but you do need to believe everything you say!”

The Sharkman

And yes, our Sharkman believes what he says…..

And yes, our hero, the Sharkman, is a real character!

BOATMAN SAILS TO VICTORY!

FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS WEAR WHITE BIKE SHORTS!

IS THE SHARKMAN GAINING WIEGHT?

Belo News
July 16, 2011

Galesburg, Mi. – Our story begins this week on Friday evening, where our intrepid hero, the Sharkman, was attending the Wine Tasting Fund Raiser at the Binder Park Zoo. While testing and judging the Michigan Wines and gazing at the cheetahs, red panda’s and the wolves, he came across Rainman, Tardette, Wrong Way and Theresa (name to be determined) who were also taking part in the evenings libations. These young Minions assured him that after an evening of frivolity, animal watching and partaking, they would all (well except for Theresa to be named later) be out for the ride in the morning, or in Tardette’s case, would at least make Koffee at the Klutch post ride. Or would they…….

As Saturday dawned over the Cove, the Sharkman did not exactly leap out of his Shark Bed as he shook the wine induced cobwebs from his shark addled head. However, after some strong Shark Koffee he found himself more than ready to ride.

That is when it all went suddenly wrong.......

Having had some issues with his seat post dropping and re-adjusting the height, and in an attempt to make a final “tweak” before heading out, our hero snapped the seat bolt on his trusty titanium stead!

Oh, the humanity! Could all that Whitsun our hero has been drinking be causing a weight problem?

Since Sharkman is a world class procrastinator, it was approximately 5 minutes before launch when this occurred!

Oh, the humanity! What would our hero do?

Quick thinking as our hero is, he thought "it would have to be his trusty cyclocross bike, the Felt 1x!"

Heading out in the heat, he met up with the Great Dane who was patiently waiting about a half mile down the road from the Cove. The young rider was too polite to point out the different bike, but the Sharkman bent his ear about the seat bolt anyway.

As the duo got to the start, the Minions once again, started to pour into the parking lot. The Skipper and Bissell Boy rolled in with what seemed like a cast of thousands, including a rider who looked strikingly like Thor Hushovd, the Norwegian World Champion and recent Yellow Jersey holder and now three stage victor at this years TdF!

No, it wasn’t Thor himself but none other than the Zickman! Looking quite dapper in the white kit of the World Champion the only problem seemed to be how sheer the white shorts appeared. Skipper made the comment that “the Minions were one rain storm away from a view of a nasty view of Zickman’s @$$ if you know what I mean!” Yep, it was sort of like a train wreck, …..you just couldn’t look away!

At EXACTLY 8:00 A.M. the Skipper got things started and he and the Sharkman led the mass of the Mighty Minion Nation past a waving Jamie and the Klutch and out on to the road.

Wolf King, for whatever reason, had shot out early and was up the road already as Gazelle Girl jumped on with shouts of “Party-Party-Party!” from the peloton. Wolf King, being so far up the road, took the first sprint to the booing of the Mighty Minion Nation.

Sharkman tried to take a count at the G Ave. crossing, but lost it at 30 riders. In addition to Skipper leading the B Group, M.C. Hammer, Chumbly and Danimal made up a C group!

As the ride went on and the Minions began to go into oxygen deprivation, Zickman’s derrière became more and more interesting. Everyone was clamoring to get a spot behind Zickman just to see what all the excitement was about. But alas, there was no rain, though several riders thought about shooting their water bottles at the World Champion Wannabe's rear end.

Oh, the humanity!

The ride was extremely mellow, if not fast, through the Country Club section and on to the Col de Norte. The B group stayed with the main peloton throughout the ride, but at the top of the Col de Norte someone stated a rider was off the back. Sharkman went back but did not see anyone, but apparently it was a rider who had come with the Irishman and he was going back to get him and would finish the ride with him as they were dropping off.

As the Nation moved south, one of the new, young riders asked about the rule about crossing the G Spot. Sharkman stated that the rule was that no rider could make a break until after ALL riders had crossed the G Spot. This rule had been established when riders started to break early, causing riders to take chances on crossing roads and breaking the peloton apart, taking away the personality of the ride and the ability for all the riders to be at the finish.

At the he Digital Divide, the Minions had to wait to cross and the traffic was so bad that they had to cross in two waves!

The pace picked up big time as the Nation bore down on the G Spot crossing.

As the Minions lined up for the finish, Great Dane and Hossman took the lead and like a couple of Clydesdales chomping at the bit, led the stampede towards the stop ahead finish.

Sharkman, always worried about bunch finishes, was at the front trying to spur everyone on, but just doesn't have that staying power that the Tow Truck brings to the party!

At the top of the final hill to the finish, the peloton filled the road and were pretty bunched up as the stop ahead came into view. Riders began to peal off the front as the fresher riders came forward. Zickman went by Sharkman, then Sharkman went by Zickman, then Zickman came back! Zickman stated at the press conference that when Sharkman went by him, it looked like he was riding a newspaper delivery bike and he just couldn’t get beat by a bike like that!

Hey! It’s a cyclocross bike!

Meanwhile, Boatman, who had been lying in wait, came to the front with Wolf King, Zickman, Dutch, Great Dane, All Black, Gazelle Girl, Hutch and others on his wheel. Sharkman watched in fear as this mob descended on the finish before him. Riders were boxed in and some were beginning to try to break out….always a dangerous situation. Some riders did not hold their lines, and wheels were touched, but fortunately, no one went down as Boatman took the tape with Dutch and Zickman finishing out the podium!

Since Sharkman did not have his regular bike with computer, Wolf King forwarded the attached download from his iPhone app. Unfortunately, Wolf King does everything in kilometers, not realizing this is America where we don't do that because we are a great country or what!

We here at Belo News did some conversions and found that the average speed for the ride was about 19.3 mph. Concerning the Maximum Speed, we are wondering if Wolf King had the app on while he was driving to the start (or is the Mighty Minion Nation really that fast?).

Trip time: 01:24:47
Trip distance: 43.8 km
Trip calories: 1826 kcal (what the hell is a Kcal?)
Average speed: 31.1 km/h
Maximum speed: 81.7 km/h (yea, right....)
Climbed altitude: 36 m

SAFETY REMINDER

Just a reminder to the Mighty Minion Nation, that in a bunch finish, EVERYONE has to hold their line. We don’t want anyone to get hurt out there and if you are boxed in, you CANNOT make a sudden move with only a few meters to go. PLEASE, HOLD YOUR LINES! Particularly at the finish where speeds are high and any small, sudden move can take down a number of riders.

The fans went wild on the Champs le Galesburg as the Mighty Minion Nation descended on the Klutch. Jamie was waiting, as were the paparazzi and tofosi!

Once again, a large number of Minions attended the press conference where much of the discussion centered on how good Zickman looked in his white kit. Zickman did share that he had to speak with Nikeboy to see how he got away with “less sheer” in his white shorts…..who can forget the big guy in his Mellow Johnny kit?

Nikeboy in his Mellow Johnny Kit!

Zickman, Skipper, Gazelle Girl and Boatman discuss the finishing sprint at the Klutch.

The guest appearance by Tardette, or even Rainman did not materialize. We can only assume how long that party went on!

Sharkman got a lecture from Wolf King about how a rider should never, NEVER be without an extra seat bolt and told him he had one in his car he would give to him. However, after riding back to the Wolf King’s car, the same rider that was doing the lecturing about never, NEVER going without an extra seat bolt, didn’t have an extra seat bolt in his tool kit. So much for NEVER.

Can there by anymore excitement in biking? This is where the elite meet to ride!

Don’t miss this week’s ride!

TUESDAY NIGHT RIDE REPORT

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE!

Belo News
July 19, 2011

Battle Creek, MI. – With the heat index at 100 + it was going to be a hot ride Tuesday evening. As Sharkman did a late afternoon check the excuses started to come rolling in. “My bike is in the shop” or “I am in Chicago” or “I have a dentist appointment” and our personal favorite, “I’ve been kidnapped in Bogota by a Colombian drug cartel!” (Sharkman should probably have done something about that one but he figured he would take care of it after the ride.)

So, only two Minions launched from the start: our intrepid hero, the Sharkman and his loyal side kick, Stingray. However, they were greeted out on River Road by Boatman and the Skipper. The heat was searing as the four riders did the tour with Skipper dropping off in Augusta and Boatman proceeding as far as Rt. 89 in Battle Creek before heading back.

Final speed, a very respectable 20.2 mph!

If you looking for some great pace line work, this is the ride for you! Tuesday Nights at 6:00 p.m. from Kellogg HQ upper parking lot.

Be there!

NIKEBOY CHECKS IN FROM ESTONIA!

Belo News
July 14, 2011

Estonia – B Group Leader and rider extraordinaire, Nikeboy, reported in from Estonia where he was enjoying a kup of koffee after leading a Minion B Group in the eastern European country. It is hoped that Nikeboy will be back soon to take up his spot in the peloton but he did want to let everyone know he is having a great time touring northern Europe!

ANYONE REMEMBER BOFFO? OR HIS CELEBRITY RIDER BROTHER?

Some of you long time Minions will remember Boffo the Clown. A classic rider who entertained the entire peloton with his antics. We haven’t seen Boffo in some time and rumors had floated that he was back in Eastern Europe wrestling bears with a Russian Circus.

However, Belo News just got the attached note from Boffo talking about his brother Duane, who years ago rode with the Minion Nation. At the time he was a minor league pitcher for a Detroit Tiger (Western Michigan White Caps in Grand Rapids) farm team and a celebrity Minion Rider.

Well, not anymore! He will be pitching in the big leagues with the Tigers as this edition of the Belo News goes to press!

Here is the scoop!

Dear Sharkman,

While my wife questions my minion status as it's been a little while, I assure her that I'm a minion forever! Just wanted to give you a head's up in regards to a former "celebrity" rider:

http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2011_07_20_oakmlb_detmlb_1&mode=preview&vkey=preview_web_home&c_id=det

Cheer for him tonight! Let's hope his first outing in the Big Leagues of Baseball is better than his first outing with the "Big Leagues" of cycling, the Minion Nation, where he promptly threw-up half-way into the ride! Although that may be me if I ever get up early enough to join you guys again! :)

Boffo

Editors Note - Great to hear from you Boffo and the Mighty Minion Nation awaits your return! At press time, Duane went 6 solid innings for the Tigers!

NEW SHARKLET IN THE PELOTON!

HUGE TURN OUT SEES ICEMAN TAKE IT ALL!

WHERE WAS GAZELLE GIRL,…..THIS TIME?

Belo News
July 9, 2011

Galesburg, Mi. – As previously stated, it is a Minions time of year (warm days, TdF on TV 24/7 and Whitsun in season) and for our intrepid hero, the Sharkman, it got even better last Saturday morning. As our hero awoke, he had a text message waiting for him from Lava Girl telling him that a new Sharklet had arrived in the Shark Family! Beckett Duggan Moulton was born Saturday morning to Nicole and Sam Moulton. Beck weighed in at 7 lb. 8 oz./20 inches! A real keeper! Is that kid cute or what?!!

Congratulations Nicole and Sam and welcome to the Shark Family Beck! Can’t wait to get you on the bike! A tour winner in 2036?

With the good news, our hero headed out to the start and the Great Dane joined on for the trip over to Galesburg. The weather was again picture perfect and the parking lot was a great indicator of just how great it was. Count was again lost at 30 riders as the parking lot continued to fill up for the start. Returning for their season debut was Pat Gallagher, herein known as the “Irishman” and “Bling Girl.” Welcome back! Also returning for the season were two Team Taylor riders. None other then Team Taylor Captain, the Iceman himself, as well as his loyal sidekick, Cleary, who was looking good, decked out in full Team Taylor kit! Welcome back Team Taylor!

Since there had been quite a controversy concerning the 4th of July “early start, the Sharkman waited until EXACTLY 8:00 a.m. to announce the birth of new Sharklet Beck, as well as the fact that portions of the course had been chip & sealed and that those sections would be declared “Neutral Zones” for safety reasons.

Skipper announced the start and had also volunteered to lead the B Group again, while Nikeboy is absent.

The sound of pedals clicking and the whir of gears filled the air as the Mighty Minion Nation, 30 plus strong, rode past the Klutch, where Jamie came out to wave “Good Morning” with fear in her eyes that the entire Nation would be stopping for koffee after the ride!

Would there be enough koffee?

Unfortunately, again no Gazelle Girl…..more on that later.

First Skipper, then Hoosier Boy, led the Sharkman out to the first sprint. Skipper dropped back to led the B Group and Sharkman shot ahead to get a count of the riders.

The first section of chip & seal was traversed safely before the ascent of the col de Twin Lakes. The speed picked up at the Yorkville Church as the Tow Truck, wearing a dapper Miller Energy jersey, went to the front and started a humongous pull with the Great Dane right on his wheel, through Kellogg Korner and past the country club. Interestingly, the B Group was still with the throng of riders at this point without taking the cut off!

The second section of chip & seal came up at Base Line Road right after the col de Norte as the Mighty Nation headed south. Again, the Minion train was reduced to slower speeds and took the cut off at the Bible Conference Hills to Frona’s to avoid the stones. Falcon, however, went ahead and rode the chip & seal, though no one could understand why.

Once the peloton cleared the Digital Divide, the normal pace line picked up with the Tow Truck again taking the lead out. The pace line sustained speeds of 26 miles per hour as the fast moving freight train bore down on the G Spot sprint.

At the G Spot crossing, Sharkman shouted out to be careful for the last sprint, telling Minions to hold their lines at the finish. Sharkman was worried about the large mass of riders descending on the finish all at one time and was hoping a rider would take them out.

But not to fear, Hossman and the Pirate took the lead and ran hard with Sharkman and the Tow Truck right behind them along with a cast of what seemed like thousands! The sound of whirring wheels and shifting gears filled the air as the Mighty Minion Nation began to get into position for the final sprint.

As Hossman, Pirate and Sharkman dropped off, the Tow Truck took the lead out, throwing himself on his sword to stretch out the peloton, over the final hill to the descent to the finish. Iceman, showing his mid season form, though he stated he was out of shape, cranked it up, lighting his afterburners to the finish with Thor and Falcon on his rear wheel.

And that is how they finished. Average speed 19.7 despite the neutral zone speeds. Additionally, Sharkman registered a 33 mph max speed in the finish sprint and he wasn’t even near the leaders!

The fans went wild on the Champs le Galesburg and the Mighty Minion Nation zipped up their jerseys for their sponsors and the tofosi as the photographers grabbed shots of the returning hero’s!

The Klutch was ROCKING, as a record number of Minions stopped for the post race press conference and autograph signing. Minions like Squeaky and the Tow Truck came in as well as the day’s winner, Iceman, to celebrate the cycling scene and to cool those afterburners.

Squeaky gave a post ride seminar on “How to carry your bike pump.” This was very well received and the PowerPoint was very impressive.

It actually got so noisy in the Klutch it was hard to hear people talk! The B Group arrived shortly after the main group and the Skipper complained he had to wait in a line that ran out the door to get his koffee!

Sharkman got escorted home by Thor and Conor, herein known as Wrong Way (he will explain that to you for a kup of koffee), with Thor pealing off a torrid pace back to the Shark Cove that wore the old Shark out!

So you won’t want to miss this week’s edition of the KK-TdG!

It the best time of year for a Minion and you shouldn't miss a minute of it!

GAZELLE GIRL HITS THE PARTY CIRCUIT, AGAIN!

Belo News
July 9, 2011

Kalamazoo, Mi. – With Gazelle Girl, or should we say, Party Girl, again missing in action last week, the rumors began to swirl around what type of party she had attended the previous evening? Was she hosting a small soiree at the Gazelle/Dr. Toe Estate or attending a red carpet affair in downtown Galesburg the previous evening?

Neither, it appears. The Legend of the Peloton was actually riding on Saturday, but not with her beloved Minions. No, the Party Girl was taking part in a “Beer Tour” from Bell’s in Kalamazoo (MMMmmmm…..Bell’s) to a brewery in Paw Paw and back to Bell’s.

Whoa! Does this girl know how to party or what?!

Our only question here at Belo News was why the Editors weren’t invited! Come on GG Party Girl, the Minions love Oberon too!

It is hoped she will be returning to the peloton this week and will lead the post ride festivities at the Klutch.

TOUR UPDATE

Belo News
July 13, 2011

Paris, France – Has this been an incredible TdF or what? Stage nine saw some unbelievable crashes, but the one that will not soon be forgotten was when a camera car took out two of a breakaway group of five riders on Stage 9.

Trying to avoid a tree, a Camera Car swerved into the rider’s path knocking Johnny Hoogerland into a barb wire fence and Juan Antonio Flecha tumbling head over heals down the road. The third rider, Thomas Voekler, got knocked around but miraculously remained upright!

More amazingly, they all finished!

Hoogerland had 33 stitches put in his legs AFTER he finished the race AND after he collected his best climber jersey! Flecha also finished and both riders got the most aggressive rider award, the first time two riders shared the award in the long history of the TdF. Shows the toughness of these riders!

Just watching this crash hurts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWT8yeHGA0U

In the first nine stages of the tour this year, 18 riders have had to abandon due to crashes! Horner out with a concussion, Zabriskie with a broken wrist, Vinourkorov with a broken pelvis….it has been a tough tour this year…..

It is a reminder of how careful everyone needs to be on group rides. While the Minion Nation doesn’t usually have a camera car following them (even though they think they should), it is important that everyone makes sure that they stay on line in the finish sprint, that they look out before making a move, that they watch the rider in front of them to give them space in the event they make an unexpected move, that they insure riders know that they are riding close to other riders, these are all a part of group riding. With the large increase in riders, all Minions need to be sure to ride safely and defensively. Remember, we don’t want to leave any Minion injured OR behind!

So ride safe!

TUESDAY NIGHT RIDE SEASON SPEED RECORD SET!

Belo News
July 12, 2011

Battle Creek, Mi. – Seven Minions made up the train that set a new Tuesday Night speed record this week. Rainman, Hoosier Boy, All Black and Sharkman launched from Kellogg at 6:00 P.M. and were first met by Hossman, then Bissell Boy and Boatman. There was a strong west wind, but that just seemed to spur the Mighty Nation on to work harder together in the pace line. The group worked in perfect unison that saw speeds of up to 33 mph.

After 37th Street and with the wind at their backs, the Minion juggernaut turned up the speed and even though they returned on the chip & seal of Augusta Drive, they still finished the 29 mile course with an average speed of 21 mph! A new season record!

If you’re looking for some good pace line work and a breathtaking work out, come on out on Tuesday Nights and join the Mighty Minion Chain Gang for a wild ride! Launch Time 6:00 P.M. from the Kellogg upper parking ramp.

TWO GREAT WEEKENDS IN ONE REPORT!

RECORD TURN OUT FOR BEER JERSEY/4th HOLIDAY DOUBLE HEADER EXTRAVAGANZA!

WHERE WAS GAZELLE GIRL?

THE RETURN OF QMAN!

Belo News
July 5, 2011

Galesburg, Mi. – Where do we begin! Not only has the Minion Nation been experiencing record turn outs, route changes, Jersey Day’s, encounters with other events on the field of dreams known as the KK-TdG, but the Tour has started and an American won on the 4th of July!

For Shark Minions, this has got to be the best time of the year!

Warm temps, sunshine, big turn outs, then you get home and you have the Tour de France 24/7!
Is this a great country or what?

Go Tyler Ferrar! And to have George Hincapie as a lead out man! Whoa!

In addition to all that has been happening, the peloton has seen some faces they’ve not seen in a while! Including none other than Wolf King, making his season debut and whose photo you may recognize decked out in his signature crash dummy orange jersey perched on the back of his minivan (or should we say Daddyvan?). And he was on time!

Sooner has made the call on a couple of occasions but has only been able to ride to the first sprint before heading back home for Dad Duties. Another long lost Minion who has returned the past two weeks is Peugeot Guy! Even Yeti Boy returned, brining a new rider, the California Kid along to take part in the B Group! Jamis Girl from last season was also back. Welcome new and returning Minions!

So here we go!

June 25, 2011 Ride Report:

At the beginning of the ride, Sharkman announced that the opening sprint was open for competition as he no longer wanted to work that hard so early in the morning. However, after the Skipper got the train moving and the peloton snaked its way past the Klutch and north, no one would take the honorary sprint in honor of our hero and the Patron of the Peloton was forced to push to the front to take the sprint. Sharkman was quoted later that he was unsure as to whether he should be deeply humbled by the great honor, or if he should be upset that the Minions enjoy watching him work so hard on that first sprint. Actually, the Belo News Staff thinks it is because Minions still want to get their names in the blog for leading our intrepid hero out. The count was again, difficult to pin down but it was estimated at plus 26. It is not only getting more difficult to count riders, it is also difficult to keep track of them on the ride.

Gazelle Girl was conspicuously absent on that weekend and though the Minions were ready to greet her, it was not to be…… and more on the “Party Girl” later.

The podium was filled out by Falcon, Zickman and Flash Gordon, while Danimal took first in what has come to be known as the Tour de Toilet. (You’ll have to ask him about that one, but it does involve numerous bathroom stops and a very serpentine route…..). Suffice it to say he was seen at the start and at the finish of the ride.

The pace on the day was 19.7 mph.

The tofosi went wild on the Champs le Galesburg as a large number of Minions headed to the Klutch.

Sharkman had to cut the press conference short as he had to drive to Chicago later that day and from that point on our hero has been lost in a whirlwind of activity for the past two weeks! (Hence, no blog last week!)

July 2, 2011 Ride Report:

In preparation for the gala twin bill for the holiday, Belo News started getting emails from Minions warning of the return of the Gull Lake Triathlon on Saturday, July 2. Apparently the Gull Lake Tri officials did not confer with the Minion Commissioner of Cycling before setting the race on the same course as the KK-TdG! It is hard to believe that the Gull Lake Triathlon had last been run 17 years ago!

One of the notes came from our own Squeaky who stated that the Mighty Minion Nation needed to beware of old ladies and him on the course!

Apparently Squeaky does tri’s? Who knew?

We don’t know about our readers, but we here at Belo News find the thought of Squeaky in a spandex wet suit just a bit unsettling! Well, at least there are more places for him to put that bicycle pump, eh?

Saturday dawned bright over the Cove and as Nikeboy and Sharkman headed over to the start, the Great Dane joined on for the ride wearing a Dos Equis Beer Jersey. Interestingly, Dos Equis took second in the Beer Jersey Competition as Falcon also had the very same jersey on!

“Stay thirsty my friend!”

However, Oberon won again with approximately 7 Jersey’s. (Makes us thirsty just thinking about it). There was also a Harrycremepie Jersey but we have no idea what that is!? You'll have to ask Gazelle Girl!

Chico showed up wearing a Miller Industry (not the beer) Team Jersey instead of his signature Mexican jersey and no one recognized him in the new kit.

Twenty nine Minions plus were ready to ride as a great debate broke out on the course. It was decided that in deference to the triathlon and in fear of seeing Squeaky in a wet suit, or one of those special tri helmets, the Mighty Minion Nation decided to ride up to Hickory Corners and return by 40th Street.

To the sound of pedals clicking in, the massive peloton rode past the Klutch where Jamie came out and counted the crowd, hoping she had enough koffee for their return.

As the Nation moved north, Gazelle Girl joined on with a shout from her admiring Minions!

Again, the peloton would not contest the first sprint and our intrepid hero, the Sharkman humbly took it to the cheers of the Nation. You gotta love those Minions!

The Cheetah was on board and he brought the pace up pretty good with another new Stryker rider as the Minions attacked the col de Twin Lakes. During the Country Club section, the B Group joined on, having taken the by-pass, and the race was on to the Route 43 sprint where Sharkman reminded everyone that the group would be going up to the Gilmore Museum and then return on 40th Street. Someone mentioned that 40th had been chipped and sealed and could be a problem. This created a major disagreement on what route to take, but the Nation forged on anyway.

When the Nation got to Hickory Corners, it was learned the Triathlon was on 40th and that they would have to double back and return on the west side of the lake, adding about 4 miles to the total ride.

The pace was torrid as the Nation headed south!

A pace line formed up and a rider, who was visiting from Missouri who was simply huge, jumped in for the finish.

Sharkman took one look up at the giant and jumped on his wheel like a kitten on catnip!

He described it as though there was a full eclipse of the sun!

Sharkman, learning from riding the wheel of the big Swede just weeks before, was looking for that Star Trek experience again…..and he got it! This guy’s rear wheel looked like the slick tire on a Harley Chopper! He described the wake as being in a time warp where everything got silent and blurry!

Other riders who tried to grab the giant’s wheel had to back off when they heard the Sharkman growl at them. Sort of like a dog on a bone…..

Race monitoring technology revealed that Sharkman’s heart rate dropped to the low 60’s!

As they bore down on the finish, the big Missourian put it into another gear, leaving the old Shark smiling in his wake, to contest the final.

The rest is just a blur and we only know that the Falcon won the final sprint and the Missouri Giant was right behind him. Such a large shadow covered the rest of the field that we could not determine any other finishers. Of course, the Missouri Giant was DQed for not joining in until the end of the ride, and we have no idea who the other podium finishers were.
Qman Returns!

The Klutch was rocking after the ride, as a large number of riders were greeted by none other than the Qman himself! Yes, the Qman had made a guest appearance to sign autographs and say hello to all his fans while visiting family in the area. He had driven in from Minnesota the previous night and hadn’t gotten to bed until after 2:00 A.M. so there was no way he could make the early call. Welcome back, Qman!

July 4, 2011 Ride Report:

Happy Birthday America!

Yes, it was red, white and blue Day for the 4th of July Minion Stampede! 19 riders showed up for the gala ride, many in their very best red, white and blue kit. Of course Chico, who must not be reading the blog, showed up in his signature Mexican jersey. Who knew it was Mexican Independence Day too?

After a major discussion at the start, it was determined that the peloton would head south for a change of pace and to take the Sharkman “Mystery Tour” that included waterfalls, dams, chip and seal, the City of Scott, as well as miles of farm land and adventure. As a matter of fact, Wildman mentioned that if you took a picture of the peloton out on those roads it would be hard to differentiate them from the peloton at the Tour de France!

It was one of those simply beautiful Michigan Summer Days as the Nation gathered up in the parking lot. At 2 minutes before launch time, it did not appear that any other Minions would be joining on and as the clock hit 7:59 A.M. the Skipper got things rolling. Apparently, this was at LEAST 2 minutes before Falcon’s time and a bit early for Wildman, but apparently some Minions took exception to the early start.

Skipper and Pirate lead the Independence Day Parade through Galesburg and past the closed Klutch and then headed south to the famous Qman Hill named after an epic battle between Wolf King and Qman in years past.

At the top of the hill, Sharkman thought everyone was on and the Minions took off again. A few miles later, Wildman latched back on and stated a couple of Minions were still coming. It was then that Sharkman heard from Falcon about the early launch. He had to double time to catch on to the rambling herd. Yes, 8:00 A.M. Sharp, does mean 8:00 A.M. but to be sure, you better be READY to launch at 8:00 A.M.!

From there, the nation gathered up and Sharkman took him on his old Saturday Minion ride past a waterfall (well, you had to pretend there wasn’t a dam there, so then, it was a waterfall) past Indian Run Golf Course, Indian Lakes, Scott’s Mill, the Village of Scott’s and Scooters famous ice cream parlor, as well as the famous Scott’s Post Office, and some of the most beautiful roads and farms in the area. It ended up being a very social ride with long stretches of good pace line and great discussion. The pace may have been a bit quicker than the Sharkman was looking for but it was one of the best rides of the year!

As the riders returned down Qman Hill at break neck speeds, some splintered off to head home and the crowds were down on the Champs le Galesburg.

Sharkman, Wildman, Hoosier Boy, Stingray and Yeti Boy headed to McDonalds which seemed to be the busiest place in town. After a 15 minute wait in line, the crew enjoyed watching the Sharkman down an egg McMuffin while Yeti Boy explained the intricacy of food management and it’s relation to golf. Quite a discussion……

Can it get any better?

Show up next week and join the Mighty Minion Nation to find out!

Saturday, July 9, 2011 – Launch Time 8:00 A.M. – SHARP (or earlier!)

CHIP & SEAL SEASON IS HERE!

Special Announcement – Belo News has learned that parts of the sections between the col de Norte and Frona’s. It is hoped that it will be packed down by Saturday, but for safety reasons, this stretch will be designated as a “Neutral Zone” until further notice. The Commissioner of Cycling has defined a “Neutral Zone” as an area that YOU DON’T RIDE FAST THROUGH, BUNKIE!

PARTY GIRL? THE REAL STORY!

Belo News
June 25, 2011

Galesburg, Mi. – So, where was Gazelle Girl for the June 25th ride you might ask? Each week the Mighty Minion Nation waits for her to come over the 36th street hill and to shout out a welcome. Understandably, the Nation got concerned when she did not make the ride on the 25th. Rumors began circulating concerning the possibility of another toe injury, as only a major issue would keep the first lady of the Minion Nation away from the ride, right?

Wrong, Bunkie!

In an exclusive Belo News investigative report, it was learned that this legend of the Minion Nation, this dedicated rider of boundless energy who hardly ever misses a chance to ride with the Nation had been partying at the Gazelle Estate with Dr. Toe and some old friends and that the partying got so out of hand, it went on until 5:00 A.M.! (insert shocked sigh and expression).

Yes, you heard that here and it has since been confirmed by both Entertainment Tonight and TMZ that “the Party Girl of the Peloton” had “partaken” of substances that, well let’s say it wasn’t orange soda (insert your own mood alerting substance of choice – we here at Belo News like Arcadia Whitsun’s)!

Due to the late hour and the effects of the “orange soda (insert your choice)” our own Gazelle Party Girl was unable to make the call! Though she did try to explain the situation, her only defense seemed to be it was 4 a.m. and not 5 a.m. Pretty weak…… pretty weak…..

SUPER WET PUKER POOPER LOOPER TOUR?

Belo News
June 25, 2011

Lake Michigan, MI. – Brewman reports that while Gazelle Girl was partying, he was on a ride from Kalamazoo to Muskegon and then North around Lake Michigan all the way to Manitowoc, WI. (whoa, what was he thinking?) Here is his report!

“From there we took a boat ride across the lake to Ludington and then back to Kalamazoo. The ride was dubbed the Super Looper Tour and consisted of 8 riders and 3 wives driving a support vehicle.

After the first several days the ride took on a new name: The Super Wet Puker Pooper Looper Tour. As you can tell from the new name, the tour was challenging both from a weather and health perspective. Almost 900 miles in 10 days, there also was much fun and beautiful scenery along with visits to several breweries! You cannot plan the experiences a ride like this unfolds for you. All but one of the riders was ill at one time or another. The ride provided great memories and the challenges presented along the way have and will provide much to talk about in the future. We had daily destinations in mind but no reservations, schedules or set routes. The most fun was making it up as we went along. Many wonderful stops that provided opportunities to meet a whole bunch of great people and real characters. We are already thinking about another adventure next year…… "

Tuesday Night Ride Report(s)

June 30 Ride Report from the Pirate:

The lot was thin on this past Tuesday ride when yours truly came strolling up the walkway to the normal gathering oasis. Only the mighty Hoosier Boy showed up for this intrepid ride. The wind was near gale force strength as we made it out of town and past stinky corner (thank you lord for the wind). As we motored our way into that great metropolis of Augusta, none other than Skipper, Bissell Boy and Striker Guy and Hockey Boy met up with us. The joys of have someone to draft behind was met with HOORAY!!

The trek up G-Ave to the summit was met with a gust of wind that nearly stalled the great minion nation, but true to our hero's mantra, the peloton picked up speed and whirled down 37th street to the high school. Bissell Boy and Striker Guy did a 180 and headed for home while the tail wind help us all the way past Augusta, where the Pirate and Skipper dropped off and let Hoosier Boy motor his way back to BC. It ended with another GRRRREAT Tuesday Ride!

July 5 Ride Report from Sharkman:

Big Turn out this past Tuesday night! STINGRAY, Hoosier Boy, Rainman, Sharkman and Wilier Boy headed out in fantastic weather and were greeted by Bissell Boy, Skipper and the Tow Truck as they motored out to Augusta. Tow Truck got a taste of victory as he rode Rainman like a rented mule to the 36th street finish and then went out to take the sprint. Fear in the peloton that he may have liked that feeling too much!

The group had to return on River Road, as August Road had been freshly chip & sealed. However, it only shortened the ride by less than 2 miles.

Come on out and join the Nation on the Tuesday Night Ride. Good chance to work on pace line action!

6:00 p.m. from the Kellogg upper deck parking lot!

HAWKEYE UPDATE!

Belo News checked in with Hawkeye after his surgery on Friday, June 24, 2011. He is in good spirits, as you can see from the letter he has kept his sense of humor. Here is an update in his own words;

Sharkman,

Thanks for checking on me. I am recovering on schedule from my surgery. I have a pretty big void in the armpit and going sans deoderant isn't the most pleasant experience. I should be able to do more things with the arm in the next couple weeks.

As for my treatment for the cancer, that's proving to be a little more complex. When they removed the nodes, they removed a total of 28, 23 of which, were cancerous and they are concerned that there could be more effected in up behind the collar bone. I have only really 3 treatment options, the first being the current method of Interferon. However that is only 5-15% effective, not my idea of good odds. My other option is a newly approved drug called Yerevoy and there is a clinical trial going on here in Kzoo at the West MI cancer center, and I should know if I get in that by Friday this week and hopefully begin treatment soon after. Or there is one more trial called BRaf, at the U of M but I'm have qualified for that program yet. Still working out the details.Prognosis, 12 months if I don't get treated or treatment doesn't work. Not real warm and fuzzy. If treatment works and I respond to the new drugs, 5+ years is possible. Right now, it's time to call in a favor for divine intervention and I have 100's of people praying for me and interceding on my behalf. So my survival odds are good, or at least I plan to be around for awhile yet.I have a long road ahead of me. I am trying to stay positive and look for the good, like if I could lose 30 pounds due to chemo, I would be killer on the bike or at least look really svelt for Mrs Hawkeye so I'm not giving up, I'm going to fight and I have lots of people fighting with me. I am also bringing my bike inside/downstairs to begin spinning again so I can maintain my strength and endurance as I battle. My goal is to lead out the minion nation next summer on a glorious summer morning and to be back in the throngs of Team Taylor helping and fighting for those who can’t do it themselves.

Please share any and all details with the Nation. Thank you again for the many prayers and the support you are offering up. Know that people are praying is a great confidence booster, one that I've never felt before.

Peace to you and the minions,

Eric

Every Minion is with you and awaiting your return to the Mighty Minion Nation!
