WHAT RAIN?

THOR TAKES THE PODIUM!

COLLEGE GAME DAY THIS WEEKEND!

Belo News
Galesburg, Mi.

August 21, 2010

Galesburg, Mi. – Dawn broke wet over the Shark Cove on Saturday morning and our intrepid hero was pretty sure there would be no ride. Interestingly, however, even though the radar was showing rain, there was no rain on the Cove driveway.

As 7:00 a.m. approached, a slight rain began to fall and Sharkman decided to drive to the start at 7:30 a.m. Sharkman hates those “tweener” mornings when Mother Nature can’t decide weather to really rain or or just tease our intrepid hero.

As he debated whether to go or not, Lava Girl commented, “you better get moving, Sharkboy, or you’ll miss a second start….” Not wanting that to happen again, our hero rushed out the door, threw his trusty steed in the back of the Shark Car and headed out.

Positive no one would be at the Start, our intrepid hero was stunned to see Thor getting his bike ready, Cheddar Head looking up at the sky as he contemplated pulling his steed out of his car, and Jo MaMa on his bike and ready, indicating he had ridden to the start!

As Sharkman contemplated whether to break the Minion rule of not “Starting” in the rain, Hoosier Boy pulled in and made the comment, “I’m game…” just as Tow Truck and Ironman came riding into the parking lot. Jo MaMa had actually ridden over from Portage. Who was the Sharkman to say no to such dedication (or stupidity)!

Game on!

And thus, the Magnificent (or idiotic) Seven clicked in and headed out as the rain gently fell on the road ahead.

Tow Truck and Hoosier Boy lead our intrepid hero to the honorary first sprint and the pace picked up considerably in the run up to the cul de Twin Lakes. At the base of the climb, Jo MaMa had a flat at the back of the peloton and no one heard his shout of having a mechanical. It was only when they had contested the next sprint finish that they noticed they were minus a rider and headed back to find him.

With the tire fixed, and the rain no worse than before, the mighty Minion Nation continued their rain soaked odessey around the lake.

Cresting the cul de Norte as a group, the Minions fell into a rhythm with Tow Truck and Ironman doing a lot of the work up front.

Pleased that they had made it past the flat tire Bermuda Triangle section after the Digital Divide without a flat, the train continued heading to a hotly contested 3G Zone sprint where Tow Truck, who had pulled a large portion of the leg, and Thor fought it out with Thor managing to nip Tow Truck at the Stop Ahead.

Ironman pealed off before the finish to head home and Tow Truck again threw himself on his Minion sword to pull the Mighty Nation down 37th Street.

As the train crested the hill before the finish, Jo MaMa came out of no where to take the lead, while Sharkman latched on to his wheel with the Thor close behind.

As the riders bore down on the finish, Sharkman made a move and went around Jo MaMa, but Thor, learning from the previous week, was right on our intrepid hero’s wheel. As they both flew by Jo MaMa, Sharkman thought he might get the win, but Thor made his final move and went around the old Shark to take the win.

Final average for the ride was a strong 20.3 mph!

The rain kept the crowd’s down on the Champs le Galesburg as the riders zipped up their jersey’s for the sponsors.

The rain had continued the entire ride and it sure made the Koffee that Luann was serving taste special. Jo MaMa had to ride back to Portage in the rain and was not looking forward to getting back on the bike, but he checked in later to report he had made it home without any more flat tires.

The weather is sounding pretty good for this weekend, so you won’t want to miss this weeks edition of the KK-TdG!

WOLF KING RULES THE PODIUM!

ORE TO SHORE MOUNTAIN BIKE MINION VETERANS!

Belo News
Galesburg, Mi.

August 14, 2010

Galesburg, Mi. – Dawn broke wet over the Shark Cove on Saturday morning just as our intrepid hero was about to launch from the Shark Garage. As a matter of fact, he was just getting on the bike when the sky opened up and the rain began to fall in buckets.

Our intrepid hero hustled back into the Cove to check the radar, confirming that it was raining between the Cove and the field of dreams the Minions have come to know as the Koffee Klutch Tour de Gull!

The Sharkman decided to drive over at 7:30 a.m. and interestingly, though raining in the Creek, when he got 3 miles west of the Cove, the roads were dry and there was no evidence of any rain, nor would there be during the mornings ride.

The parking lot was filling up as the Sharkman arrived and 21 riders clicked in when the Skipper announced the start to the crowd. A number of the normal Battle Creek contingent seemed to be missing, perhaps scared off by the rain.

Skipper had also brought along Pat Gallagher, a former Minion from a few seasons ago and it was good to have him back in the peloton. Also returning for his third week, was Jeff who the Sharkman gave the official name of “Thor.” Welcome to the Mighty Minion Nation Thor! There were other new Minions who have yet to be named, along with a bunch of regulars.

As the Nation snaked its way north, three more Minions, including Toe Lady herself, Gazelle Girl, jumped on to the fast moving train.

Danimal jumped out front and pulled the Sharkman to the opening sprint. Falcon did make a move, but even Falcon wouldn’t make that mistake again, to try to contest the Patron* of the peloton twice in one season!

(*Patron - The rider who has earned the respect of the peloton. He need only express his displeasure to enforce the unwritten rules of the race (e.g. Merckx, Hinault, Armstrong, Sharkman) - Wikepidia.

The sprints and climbs were strongly contested throughout the west side of the lake, with the section from the Yorkville Church, through the Kountry Klub to Rt. 43 again being particularly quick. The Skipper had again, cleared Kellogg Korner and a minimum of gravel was in the road to slow the Mighty Minion Nation in the run up to the Kountry Klub.

The peloton stayed close on the east side of the lake, through the Bible Conference Hills and on to the Inlet. The usual pace line did not really form up after the crossing at the Digital Divide and it seemed like it was every Minion for themselves as the mass of riders bore down on the 3G Zone crossing.

As the Nation lined up for the final sprint, Hossman went to the front and proved why he is, well,….called the Hossman. Working like a Budweiser Clydesdale ripping up the fields of spring, he put his head down and pulled the peloton at speeds of 26-27 mph. As he peeled off, Gazelle Girl moved to the front and kept the pace going as the final climb came into view.

With Sharkman shouting for everyone to watch their lines, and obviously worried that the entire nation seemed to be cresting the hill at the same time, riders began to get into position for the final sprint, but no one wanted to move to the front first. That was when our new Minion, Thor, moved up with Sharkman and the nation on his wheel. As the fast paced blur of riders began to descend to the tape, Thor made a move, but had the Nation right on his Nordic rear end!
With a bit of distance to go, Wolf King made his move to the right shoulder and went by Thor, with Falcon and B-Rod on the outside! At first, it looked like the Wolf King had gone too soon and for a split second the tifosi thought that he might be caught. But it was not to be, as he timed it perfectly and took Falcon and B-Rod with a bit of room to spare! Wolf King had regained the podium with a signature finish. Average speed, 20.2 mph.....

The crowds went wild along the Champ le Galesburg as the Tifosi clamored for a glimpse of their favorite riders and the paparazzi fired off candid photographs as the riders zipped up their jerseys for their sponsors.

At the Press Conference, all the talk centered around the new trend in wearing cycling caps post race. Though Sharkman has always covered his pate with a cycling cap (with a head like that, he has to cover it up), Dutch had joined the club, much to the dismay of the Duchess and this week, young Thor wore a stylish Astana lid while sipping a dark roast from a Bottomless Kup that Luann served up to the conquering hero’s.

You won’t want to miss this weeks ride!

MINIONS KICK BUTT?

WHERE’S THE BEER?

Belo News
August 14,2010

Lake Superior, MI. - Attached are pictures of Zickman and Brewman at the Ore to Shore Mountain Bike race, before and after shots. A great race, beautiful weather and more difficult than both Minions thought. Notice the sign above their heads in the before picture. Brewman crashed twice and reported feeling handicapped by the end of the ride. Both Minions jumped in Lake Superior at the end and reported that it sure felt good! All we know is the caption on the second photo should be, “Where’s the beer?”
Congratulations Brewman and Zickman, you did the Mighty Minion Nation proud!

HUGE TURNOUT FOR KEVIN DEGEN’S FUNERAL!

Belo News
August 15, 2010

Birmingham, Mi. – Several of Team Taylor and Team Eaton members attended the funeral of Kevin Degen, whose death Belo News shared last week. It has been reported that approximately 350 riders followed Kevin’s Hearst, with his “trike” bike mounted on the roof, to the cemetery and Kevin’s final resting place. The cyclists came from as far away as Kansas, rode 7 miles under blue sky’s and with a slight tail wind, which seemed to cause the riders to believe that Kevin was riding with them. The peloton consumed a mile of the motorcade that Fox Detroit reported on in the attached clip.

http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/local/mourners-remember-disabled-cyclist-kevin-degen-20100816-mr

It was reported that Kevin’s family was very touched by the turnout.

News helicopters and vans covered the funeral.

It was a fitting tribute to a great man and a great rider whose memory will live on for all those who rode with him.

THE MEN OF THE MARIN CENTURY!

TEAM MILRAM?

HILL’S? WHAT HILL’S?

Belo News
San Rafael, CA.

August 7, 2010

San Rafael, CA. – “We need to make sure these bikes fit you properly!” said Tony, the owner of Bike Odyssey in Sausalito, California as he prepared the Focus, Team Milram carbon fiber bikes for our intrepid hero, the Sharkman and his Son in Law, the Great Moultini.

Yes, it was Marin Century weekend and the Sharkman and his two sons in law, MK and the Great Moultini were off to another bike adventure!

The Great Moultini had arranged for the Focus Bikes P.R. guy to supply two carbon fiber, Team Milram bikes for them. These team bikes were outfitted with Sram force and Tony wanted to make sure the bikes fit perfectly and he did! Both Sharkman and the Great Moultini reported that the bikes felt like their own bikes back home and rode fantastically!

Without knowing the terrain around Marin California, our intrepid hero had no idea just how hilly the course would be. MK had stated that it was “hilly” but that was not the appropriate description of a course that included 6700 ft. of climb with grades of 10.7%!

Fortunately, the bikes were equipped with rear cassette’s sporting a 28 gear, however, our host and the Father or our hero’s newest Sharklet was sporting a 25!

Dawn broke foggy over the West Coast Shark Cove as the Sharkman, MK and the Great Moultini loaded the bikes in the car. Of course, it was no small miracle that they fit two bikes on the roof and another, half in the trunk and half in the back seat with Sharkman, but miraculously, all three bikes, riders and gear fit into the Honda Civic!

The fog looked even thicker as the Honda motored across the Golden Gate Bridge and on to the start at San Rafael. The three had decided to launch as early as practical to beat any late day heat, but the temperature at the start required arm warmers and light jackets, except for MK who seemed to be able to manage the temperature in nothing more than his jersey.

At 6:43 a.m. the trio launched and was immediately faced with a major climb out of San Rafael. It was only a portent of the ride to come!

After making this climb, that seemed to take some time, and then gliding down to the first rest stop at 18 miles, MK mentioned that we would be returning on the same road and would need to climb the same hill going back, only at about 95 miles into the ride!

Though the ride remained “hilly” through Petaluma and on to the 50 mile rest stop, the course really became mountainous between the 50 and 77 mile rest stops. During the 50 mile rest stop, MK was looking at the map and a veteran rider told him that that real climbs were about to begin and that, ended up being an understatement.

At around 62 miles, one of the first 10+% grades was encountered by the Sharkman and his son in law Minions. The Great Moultini quickly went to the front, followed by the Sharkman who was standing on the pedals and swerving as he lost speed, with MK close behind grinding out his 25 rear cassette.

Though MK had to fight up the hills, he had no problem on the descents, dropping like a rock, riding to the front without fear as he let it all out on the road ahead. Mean while, the Great Moultini continued to pull the threesome as they found some of the most beautiful scenery on the ride. As they traversed the Tomales Bay area, they continued to face some of the steepest climbs of the ride. At this point, the weather had remained cool and foggy, but just as they approached the 77 mile rest stop, the sun began to creep past the clouds and the temps began to rise.

The riders started loading up on both cookies (the Sharkman reported that this ride had some of the best food ever, but the cookies were beyond description and at one point, all you could see was the bottom of our hero’s cleats as security had to pull him from the peanut butter and chocolate chip section of the cookie bins) and sun screen as they peeled off their jackets, vests and/or arm warmers.

The Sharkman’s knees were starting to talk to him as they began the last miles of the ride and the talk wasn't nice. In the back of our hero’s mind was that last hill he knew had to be climbed before the descent to the finish. The Great Moultini and MK pulled the Sharkman as they began to feel a tail wind come up behind them. As they turned on to the last section of the course it did not seem as hilly as they thought it would be. As they began the climb the wind continued to be at their backs and they found the ascent to be much easier than they thought it would be and were quite surprised when the summit came up quickly (the photo was taken on the last summit and you can see the San Rafael Valley off of Sharkman’s muscular left shoulder).

The descent into San Rafael was one of the great parts of the race and MK was like a horse that smelled the barn as he went screaming down the road with Sharkman and Moultini hot on his wheel.

As the finish approached, 105 miles, 6700 ft. of climb at 15.0 mph average had been completed!

The crowds went wild on the Champs le San Rafael as our three hero’s waved to their adoring fans. “It was a victory for America!” Sharkman was quoted as saying at the press conference where Moultini fielded questions about the great Focus carbon fiber bikes and MK talked about his “gutty” performance riding with a 25 rear cassette.

It should also be reported that all three riders, after a celebration dinner at the Chieftain Irish Pub in San Francisco with the family, were in bed and asleep by 8:30 p.m. that evening and all, was right with the world!

To get a sense of the ride, you can take a look at the attached video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoncHBoRelY&feature=player_embedded

This is one great ride and a big thanks to our host, MK who put up with the mob of Minoins all weekend and to the Great Moultini for lining up the great rides!

25 RIDERS AVOID THE SHERMANATOR!

Belo News
Galesburg, MI.

August 7, 2010

Galesburg, MI. – The Minions did ride and also avoided the Shermantor! It was reported that 25 riders toed the line on Saturday morning and that Rainman suggested an alternate route (thank you Rainman).

The ride was reported as being a quick paced and the Minions took C Ave. from Frona’s out to 40th Street and rode down to Augusta, were Wolf King took the City Limit Sprint that only he knew about. The Mighty Minion Nation than rode one of the longest single pace lines in Minion history on Rt. 89 from Augusta into Galesburg and the Klutch.

WE LOST A HERO TODAY……

Those of you that have ridden the WAM ride all know a rider by the name of “Kevin.” Kevin suffers from Cerebral Palsy, but managed to ride the WAM on a tricycle using only one leg and one arm. He is somewhat of a legend in the WAM Peloton and has raised over $150,000.00 by himself for Make a Wish..

During the WAM, when riders went by him on his special bike, everyone would shout.... "Kevin, Kevin, Kevin" and when he would come into the dining hall everyone would stand up and applaud. He was very special to the all the WAM riders and especially the kids.

Make a Wish honored him with a special recognition this year at the award ceremony and showed the attached film clip. He actually was wheeled up on stage and gave a short speech, and though hard to understand when he spoke, he gave a big thumbs up as he was wheeled off the stage that brought the house down.

We cannot imagine what it was like for him to ride in that rain on the 114 mile day using one leg. But as you will see in the attached video, nothing stopped Kevin.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YUExPsgs60

We were all saddened to learn today that Kevin passed away unexpectedly this week. He was an inspiration to all of us and proved that nothing should stop anyone from doing what they want to accomplish in life. We know we speak for all the WAM riders when we say that we have been deeply honored and moved by having ridden with him and we will always have a special place for him in the peloton.

Kevin was a true hero and an inspiration to all he knew and whose lives he touched.

WHAT RAIN?

DUTCH TAKES THE TAPE!

SHARK WEEK ON DISCOVERY!

Belo News
July 31, 2010
Reporter - Dutch

Galesburg, Mi. – Where was the Sharkman on Saturday morning? That was the question going around Saturday morning as the Mighty Minion Nation prepared to launch! Could our intrepid hero be missing? Not our Sharkman!

Oh, but yes. This legend in his own mind, missing in action? Could it be, could it possibly be?

Born of killer whales, raided by great whites, turned over to land mammals at a young age, trained early in the way of the bike and now leader of the pack, the Mighty Minion Nation, he would certainly be there….SOoooo let’s see what did happen to our hero.

Oh, yes, it is Shark Week on Discovery and though they should have a segment specifically addressing the adventures of our intrepid hero, he wasn't watching the tube. No, his absence is a much less complicated story……

As dawn broke wet over the Shark Cove, our intrepid hero was having a hard time pushing back the shark bed spread and jumping out of his warm, cozy bed like he usually does. After completing the WAM Ride the previous weekend, suffering the indignity of three flat tires in pouring rain, washing his bike not once, but twice, and putting in a number of miles during the week both on rides and commuting to work, the normally bandy little shark was thinking it might be nice to sleep in on a Saturday. It seemed our hero may have been suffering from a bit of mid season burn out.

As he pushed back the shark drapes on the Cove’s windows he realized the roads outside were wet and it looked dark and foreboding in the ocean, so he clicked on the Shark Radar and it was then he saw the ominous green rain clouds bearing down on his field of dreams, the KK-TdG. It was an angry sea on this Saturday morning.

Our hero reset the shark alarm and climbed back into his warm and inviting bed. “I’ll drive over and then make the call on whether to ride or not.….” he thought as he drift back off to sleep.

When the alarm went off again, our hero checked the radar and the green cloud was still there, still advancing on his beloved course. He shot an email note off to Wolf King stating, “Are you riding? Too wet for me.” to which the reply came back, “I’m on my way to the start!” Sharkman wasn’t sure what to do when the next email arrived from Wolf King….”21 riders at start!”

Sharkman replied, “Yeah, right….” But when Wolf King didn’t respond, he realized he wasn’t joking but was RIDING. By now, it was 8:15 a.m. and our hero was still in his shark pajama’s. Uh, Oh, Game on! And Sharkman was missing his first start in 5 years! Oh the humanity of it all!

Lava Girl sat there, sipping her coffee and watching the shark fret, shaking her head and saying, “you better get going Shark Boy (she likes to keep him in his place)!” With that, Sharkman threw on his kit, pumped his tires and headed out to launch at 8:30 a.m. - SHARP!

The Shark hustled to the course and headed north on the west side of the lake. He thought he might get a bit further before he saw the Mighty Minion Nation, moving like a freight train as they came through the Digital Divide on to the 3GZone. As a matter of fact, he almost took them all out as he made a U-turn in front of them. There were indeed, 21 Minions in the peloton as they began bearing down on the 3GZone.

Sharkman thought he might get some sympathy from his loyal Minions, but instead was showered with the scorn of the peloton, “Where were you!” “Chicken!” “Afraid of a little wet road!”

Oh, how fleeting fame……

Dutch, winner of the final sprint, now takes over to report on the ride and the finish.

Dutch writes;

I thought I would pass along at least my results from the minion ride last Saturday. Due to the Sharkman’s conspicuous absence I thought it only appropriate to take the honorary Sharkman sprint on 36th St. I also took the sprint at the 3 GZone. And of course I took the final sprint (for the very first time) to claim the top spot on the podium riding for Cascarelli's/Arcadia Brewing/Team Active Racing (you have to mention the sponsor). It was so momentous that I was greeted by a podium girl (Mrs. Dutch, now forever to be referred to as Duchess) at the Klutch. (Welcome Duchess!)

(Editors Note – The other two spots on the podium were filled out by Bissell Boy and Brewman! They, however, were not greeted by any podium girls and have filed the appropriate protests and grievance with the Cycling Commission.)

Not that I'm conceited, but that is all I remember from the ride (Editors note – welcome to Sharkman’s world!)

Oh, except that the breakaway was almost taken out by a wayward cyclist on 37th St. (Editors note – uh, that would be Sharkman hisself!)

(Editors note - Luann was at the Klutch to greet everyone for the Press Conference and the major topic of discussion was Dutch’s cycling cap and how good he looked in it. He seemed to have left that part out of the story, so we prompted him to respond, particularly since podium girl Duchess, didn’t not seem to agree with how he looked in the cap.) Back to Dutch....

Yes, I did forget about the cycling cap. The Duchess hates it and also my shaved legs. But she knows that I never do anything half-assed. I'm a cyclist, and it all goes with the territory. (Well said, Dutch, well said……)

SHERMINATOR THIS SATURDAY!

BEWARE!

COURSE CHANGE?

Belo News
August 7, 2010

Galesburg, Mi. – This weekend the Sherminator takes place and we all remember what happened last year when the Mighty Minion Nation tangled with the last place participant who decided to take a left turn into the peloton and take out three of our own.

Since the Sharkman will not be present this Saturday, it will be up to the peloton to make the decision to either declare a “Neutral Zone” between the Digital Divide and the 3GZone with no racing or pace lines, or take a southern route and miss the race entirely. We do not want to see the kind of carnage we had last year so BE SAFE OUT THERE!

The Sharkman “STRONGLY” recommends avoiding the Sherminator area completely. (see email)

Bissell Boy hopes to have a southern route figured out, but if he is not there, hopefully, the Minions will be careful!

This Saturday, August 7, 2010

Launch Time – 8:00 A.M. – SHARP!

Be there!

Well, except for the Sharkman who will be at the Marin County Century in California! Good Luck Sharkman and Son in Laws, MK and the Great Moultini!

WILDMAN IN CHINA?

Belo News
August 3, 2010
Reporter - Wildman

Shanghai, China - Wildman reporting in from Shanghai! It's hot, humid, crowded and busy. But in the midst of all this, Wildman found the Trek store!

I went in there in search of a "steal" on a knock-off Madone, but guess what? Those suckers are expensive EVERYWHERE! So, I settled for the one and only jersey they had in a 2XL (Wildman likes his potstickers if you know what I mean), which is a pretty cool Australian race jersey. I did get a steal on that, as it was only $200RMB, or about $30! And then the young man you see in the picture threw in a cool hat, which has the "Merida" bike brand name in Chinese characters, and a key chain. Is China a great country or what?

I look forward to sporting my new rags in this weekend's KK-TdG, ankle permitting.

Have a great week,

Wildman

P.S. Feel free to share the above in this week's blog. (oh, not a problem Wildman, we did!)
